Background
Our client, one of the largest humanitarian organizations in Zimbabwe, specializes in the deployment of relief and development projects that benefit more than 2 million people in crisis each year. Many of its operations are run from areas that are off beaten paths and very far from city lights. And as is the story in such areas, connectivity – though mission critical, is almost always unavailable. In the case of our client, to access internet services, operators would have to travel regularly to the nearest town or city, cumulatively making communication, monitoring, and data collection a costly and time-consuming endeavour. Over time, this had become a major handicap for field teams precluding the implementation of aid work. Several attempts at rectification had been initiated through other service providers. However, all such efforts had proved futile due to the existence of physical barriers in the natural world such as hills, forests and rivers that obscured the line of sight. This typically meant that signal strength was always poor if any at all.

Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) is a connectivity system that can be used in place of large physical networks. VSAT technology bounces signals from satellites instead of transporting them through physical means like ethernet connections. Thus, making it an ideal solution for connecting individuals, businesses or NGOs like our client operating in areas where telecommunications infrastructure is less dense or wired options are limited.
As our client experienced, VSAT deployment was quick, and each of the 10 remote sites was connected within a matter of hours. The VPN (VPN) service further established a safe, encrypted online connection between the Head Office and its sites, necessary for network security.
